A sculpture to remember the innocent victims of the mafia bomb exploded 15 years ago in Via De’ Georgofili, next to the Uffizi Gallery

A sculpture to remember the innocent victims of the mafia bomb exploded 15 years ago in Via De’ Georgofili, next to the Uffizi Gallery May 27th, 1993: a bomb explodes in front of the Georgofili Academy, just by the Uffizi Gallery, killing five innocents in their sleep. Among these, a 50 days old girl. Her sister, who was 9, died too.

Other mafia bombs detonated in other Italian cities that year: for the first time in its history the mafia was attacking the State outside Sicily.

The reason, the message behind those bombs was that Cosa Nostra did not want retaliating against a (small part of the)State that was doing too much against organized crime. More precisely, Cosa Nostra was retaliating against the 1992 definitive of the Maxi-trial, against the 41 bis article of the penal code (the so called carcere duro -hard prison for mafiosi and other important criminals - introduced in 1992 just after the excellent cadavers made by the mafia the same year, prosecutors Falcone and Borsellino, and – most important – was attacking the State to put its conditions for a future peace” to be ”negotiated” in their strategy with the State. A strategy that, considering the developments of the last 15 years, was probably successful.

Many are the mafiosi that in recent days are obtaining the revocation of the 41 bis. Among these, seems a paradox but is just reality, Cosimo Lo Nigro: the guy who that night detonated the bomb with his cigar. A bomb that was meant to abolish the 41 bis.

This lead to the protest of the Association of the relatives of the victims of the bombs, who consider the recent revocation of the 41 bis to many mafiosi “an offense to the whole city”, a spokesperson of the organization said.

In Via De’ Georgofili today there is an olive tree, in front of which indifferent tourist pass every day. Florence is remembering the five victims of the bomb with a sculpture. In the sculpture there is written: in the memory of those innocent victims that lost their lives due to a cowardly attack.
