Gonzaga University in Florence awards Renaissance Certificate
This academic year the Gonzaga in Florence Program has introduced the Renaissance Certificate track, an integrated series of courses which allow students a full immersion in the history, philosophy, art, literature of the Florentine Renaissance. Upon successful completion of the track students are awarded a Renaissance Certificate.
The first certificate was awarded yesterday to Meredith Donovan, history major, classical studies minor, by the Gonzaga in Florence Dean Dr. Patrick Burke, in the presence of Dr. Michael Herzog, Senior Advisor to the Academic Vice President and Dr. Patricia Terry, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of Gonzaga University in Spokane. The ceremony was attended by students, professors and Meredith's parents arrived for the occasion.
At the end Meredith told The Florence Newspaper what the Renaissance program in Florence has meant to her education:
“Living in Florence and traveling abroad this year has sparked in me a great interest in the Renaissance. To begin with, the Renaissance is a combination of the two worlds that I understand and can relate to: the Classical world and Catholicism. Also, following the Renaissance Program has given me a sense of connection to the very past that I study: a Renaissance humanist education like the one I am getting at my liberal arts college is exactly the same kind of education that the most influential thinkers of the Renaissance world received. I hope to pursue a career in academics so I can share my passion for learning and experiencing history with other students.”
