Munich's Strongbeer Festival - Ends March 27th
Written By: Adrienne Micheli
During the month of March, for two weeks, German breweries brew up their strongest beer for Starkbierzeit, also known as the strong beer festival. The festival is similar to Oktoberfest, minus the huge tourist crowd.
During the month long celebration of Starkbierzeit, local beer halls in Munich, Germany, throw parties promoting their strongest brews, along with typical Bavarian dishes.
The place to go for the festival is the Lowenbrau Keller brew hall. 16.50 euro gets you admission into the festival, which starts at 6:00 pm and lasts until midnight. For the 2010 season, the festival starts on the 26 of February and ends the 27 of March.
From Wednesday through Saturday night, festival goers can find live bands, hearty Bavarian food, and strong seasonal beer, along with the regular lighter brews. Boulder lifting competitions, and a beauty contest are also on the agenda. Men try out at a station.
Upon entering the beer hall during Starkbierzeit, the tables are packed with Germans along with smaller, but noticeable amounts of visitors. Each ticket has a table number and everyone sits amongst each other. At the beginning of the evening, groups of friends talk amongst each other, but after some strong beer and Bavarian food, the already relaxed atmosphere becomes even friendlier.
A few hours into the night, people are dancing and making new friends, while drinking more beer. The highly skilled wait staff carries multiple heavy steins of beer and large trays of food. A popular dish amongst the diners at Starkbierzeit is a large platter of German meats accompanied with potatoes, sauerkraut, and potato salad. This dish is ideal for sharing with a large table, and goes well with which ever beer you choose.
Munich has much to see and the Starkbierzeit is another reason to visit this beautiful German city. The festival is only around for the month of March and is a great way to spend a weekend in a different country. There are a lot of attractions during the day and a great cultural German festival during the night.
